For many years Butetown History and Arts Centre recorded oral history interviews and this priceless audio collection is now in the control of The Heritage & Cultural Exchange.
In this podcast series we’ll hear the voices of some of the pioneers of the Windrush Generation who are no longer with us but have left their memories and reflections of life in Tiger Bay. They joined a long established multi-cultural community adding to what was already one of Britain’s most diverse.
Podcast 1 - 'Tony' Lenny
Primus Felicianos Anthony (known as Tony) Lenny was born on 10th June 1928. He came to Cardiff, from St Lucia as a seaman. He brought his wife to live with him and his children were born in the City. Tony died in December 1989 aged 61 years.

We meet Godfrey Gill - born in British Honduras (now Belize) on the 18th January 1919. Godfrey he had been recruited by officials from the British government to come to the UK to help with the War effort, arriving here in 1942.He died in Cardiff on 20th October 1990 aged 71 years.
In this interview -recorded in 1987 - he tells Glenn Jordan and his team from Butetown History & Arts Centre about his early life, and the decades that he lived in Tiger Bay. Jaswant came to Cardiff in 1954 when his father opened a shop. The family had lost their home in the partition of India, and - with ten other Sikh families - migrated to the UK. 'Jas' as he was known, was one of the first qualified Social Workers from a BME background in Britain. He was a co-founder of Race Equality First in 1976; he was a Magistrate for 20 years; a City Councillor (for Riverside Ward) for 10 years, and he served a term as Cardiff's Deputy Lord Mayor. He died on 7th May 2024 at the age of 85.
